Discovering the science behind sleep (Manila Bulletin)

May 3, 2013 COMMENTS

In this day and age of open opportunities and endless possibilities, individuals find their unique way of getting by. Active or relaxed, driven or laidback, whichever pace a person goes by, everyone ultimately turns it in to get some well deserved sleep.

Sleep is an important part of an individual’s day. It is the time when the body recuperates after a stressful day and recharges for the next one. Despite how crucial the act is, it is still something that is underappreciated by most.

“In a 24 hour day that we all have, there is time for work and there is a time for play, but equally as important is the time for sleep,” shares Dr. Teofilo Lee-Chiong Jr., Professor of Medicine at the National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado. “The more we sleep better, the more we are able to work better, study better and enjoy life better,” Dr. Lee-Chiong added.

In celebration of World Sleep Day recently, the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine together with Uratex Foam invited Dr. Lee-Chiong and fellow sleep expert Dr. Deborah Bernardo to lead a talk that delved deeper into the science of sleep.

According to Dr. Bernardo, Head of the Comprehensive Sleep Disorders Center and Chief of the Neurology Section of St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City, 45 percent of the world’s population suffers from some form of sleep problem that threatens the health and the quality of life of billions of individuals worldwide. However, only a third of those patients will seek professional help.

“Sleep is not just a personal burden but a burden to society. In the USA, issues from insomnia alone cost billions of dollars. There are approximately 71,000 injuries attributed to sleep deprivation, 1550 of which resulted to deaths,” Dr. Bernardo explained.

Dr. Bernardo pointed out that there are two types of sleep deprivation, acute and chronic. The effect of acute or short term sleep deprivation is lack of concentration resulting to poor performance which may lead to other accidents. While chronic or long term sleep deprivation can cause compromised immune system and obesity which can lead to heart attack or maybe even stroke. Recent studies, discussed by Dr. Bernardo during the symposium, also suggest that inadequate or unhealthy sleeping patterns can cause the development of cancer.

Uratex supports PSSMI’s Sleep Summit (The Philippine Star)

May 3, 2013 COMMENTS

In connection with the celebration of World Sleep Day, the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine, Inc. (PSSMI) recently held the 7th Sleep Symposium and 2013 Sleep Summit dubbed “Sleeplessness Today: New Insights and Strategies” at the Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay City.

“We are actually going through an epidemic of sleep deprivation,” said Dr. Rosalina Espiritu-Picar, PSSMI immediate past president. “That’s why this year, the theme is mostly on sleeplessness, insomnia, difficulty in sleeping — mostly because globally, these are very common conditions.”

Sleeplessness is one of the most common sleep-related complaints. “There are lots of possible causes from where sleeplessness or insomnia comes from. We are trying to piece together all of them through this conclave,” she said.

No less than Dr. Teofilo Lee-Chiong, a globally recognized sleep expert, flew to Manila from the United States and led the dinner symposium with his talk on “Pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management of insomnia.”

“The main purpose of this event is actually to educate. We want to get people informed and also to create interest from the younger physicians, especially residents, to be aware and understand the importance of sleep,” said Espiritu-Picar.

One of the main culprits of sleep deprivation is an irregular sleep schedule. There are also certain medical conditions that can cause insomnia like anxiety, depression, psychiatric disorders, cardiac problems, snoring or stoppage of breathing while sleeping, and chronic pain.

MANILA, Philippines – There are so many things we do in bed other than getting intimate like resting, reading or watching TV. It ultimately makes practical sense that a mattress is the perfect gift for your loved one even if they haven’t realized it yet.

“Many things that we take for granted are affected by sleep,” Dr. Raymonde Jean, director of sleep medicine and associate director of critical care at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, stated at the huffingtonpost.com. “If you sleep better, you can certainly live better. It’s pretty clear.”

To have a good night’s sleep, choose a mattress brand that’s known for comfort, style and durability. Uratex Premium Mattresses might just be the answer to your needs.

Scientific studies, as cited by longevity.about.com, state that sleep reduces stress: “When your body is sleep-deficient, it goes into a state of stress. The body’s functions are put on high alert, which causes an increase in blood pressure and a production of stress hormones. Higher blood pressure increases your risk for heart attacks and strokes. The stress hormones also, unfortunately, make it harder for you to sleep.”

There is the Uratex Therapoint Mattress, a superior-grade, high-resilient foam where comfort and support is at a perfect balance so you enjoy deep, sound sleep every night. Therapoint Mattress uses the Coolmax Technology Mattress cover, a high-performance fabric that dries fast compared to other mattresses. Coolmax minimizes tiredness caused by perspiration during your sleep and maximizes sleep quality.

The award was received by Christiane Marie Medina, managing director of Uratex Philippines Inc., from Dr. Adrien Quidlat, the new POA president, and Dr. Geoffrey Battad, POA’s immediate past president, during the POA’s 63rd annual convention held recently at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria in Quezon City.

January 26, 2011 COMMENTS

Trapunto Mattress by Rajo Laurel

Uratex has teamed up with Rajo Laurel to create the Rajo Laurel Designer Collection for Uratex, an exclusive brand of stylish, premium-quality bedding and foam products.

A match made in heaven! Rajo Laurel is one of the most renowned fashion designers in Asia and consistently one of the best, most in-demand couturiers in the country. Uratex is the number one foam manufacturer in the Philippines, constantly at the forefront of foam innovation. Both are celebrated for their pioneering ideas and smart, no-nonsense style.

Rajo Laurel is widely regarded as one of the most respected designers in Asia. Making the Philippines proud time and again since the early ‘90s, Rajo Laurel was named Air France’s Young Designer of the Year in 1994, Most Promising Designer of the Year in 1996, and The Loop’s (Editors’ Choice Award) Favorite Designer in 1998. He also re-ceived awards at the ASEAN Young Designers Competition in Singapore in 1993, Smir-noff Fashion Design Awards in 1995, and Asia Collection “Makuhari Grand Prix ‘97” held in Japan in 1997.

Throughout his prolific career in fashion design, Rajo Laurel has staged and participated in several major galas not only in Asia but also in other parts of the world. He was part of such exhibitions as the 1997 Philippine Centennial Show in Sydney and the Saks Fifth Avenue Bridal Exhibition staged in New York in 2001. In 2004 and 2005, he represented the Philippines in Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week. In 2007, he was invited to par-ticipate in the prestigious Bali Fashion Week. Today, he continues to grow his fashion and lifestyle business with chic, smart and exciting designs.

Now in his new role as Uratex’s business partner and design consultant, Rajo Laurel brings in a fresh thread of excitement to complement the dynamic fiber of this leading foam brand.

“We’re excited about this collaboration with Rajo Laurel. He’s one of Asia’s most brilliant fashion designers. Versatile, creative, very talented,” says William Lee, the executive vice-president of Uratex.

Just as thrilled, the multi-awarded fashion icon shares, “I feel really good about this part-nership with Uratex. I love sleeping! It’s one of my favorite things in the world! And I know the importance of a good sleep.” He adds, “Through this exclusive Uratex collection, I can now interpret my desires for a perfect sleep.”

The Rajo Laurel Designer Collection for Uratex offers a perfect marriage of style, function, state-of-the-art foam technology and modern, sophisticated designs with classic, neutral colors. It is a showcase of Rajo Laurel’s signature designs, his personal interpretation of comfort and elegance for everyone’s most intimate and relaxing moments.

Rajo Laurel enthuses, “I was so excited to create this new collection of very special and exclusive designs for Uratex. For me, everything new is always exciting!” As for his design inspiration, he says, “I was inspired to incorporate tailoring and dressmaking techniques in the foam designs. I am a fashion designer first and so this is what I drew inspiration from.”

Indeed, one of his Uratex creations called Trapunto takes inspiration from the Italian quilt-ing style of the same name. The other one called Quadrado features a classy diamond quilt design that artfully forms intersecting squares. Aside from using his signature tech-niques, Rajo Laurel also incorporated his signature in the fabric – literally – with both mat-tresses showcasing Rajo Laurel’s famed RL signature.

Together, Rajo Laurel and Uratex have designed a new, über-comfortable, elegant and fashionable approach to rest and relaxation. And this is just the beginning of what prom-ises to be a long-term partnership in redefining the art of sleeping well.
