White Noise Applications: Do They Really Work?

September 28, 2012

Ways to Better SleepWhite Noise is the result of the combination of multiple sounds and frequencies. The term “white” is used to describe sound because it shows a perspective on how light works. Let me explain. When light crosses a prism, it produces distinct, vibrant colors, like those of an average rainbow. It is said that white noise can help the human brain to feel calm and relaxed. In this article, we will touch on the topic of white noise as we try to figure out if they can really be considered as factual.

White Noise is also known as a common synthetic source of noise that is used by a tinnitus masker for sound masking. It enhances the level of sound waves into the environment of the listener, masking the ringing noise with a calming, more relaxing and less irritating sound. A tinnitus masker is a device used to add a natural or artificial sound into tinnitus (Latin word meaning “ringing”). Tinnitus is the sound waves inside a human ear in the absence of external sound. It is somehow related to several illnesses including neurological damage and nasal allergies that causes wax build-up.

But don’t get it all wrong, tinnitus is not a disease in itself; it is a mere condition that could lead to the said illnesses. It also could be a result of benzodiazepine, which enhances the effect of GABA-A (neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid). Such a phenomenon could result in hypnotic, sedative, and anticonvulsant properties in our bodies. Interestingly, its content are also being used as a treatment for sleeping disorders like insomnia, anxiety and even seizures, agitation and withdrawal from alcohol.

White Noise Application

There are some android applications spreading wide in the market that can emit White Noise, which are being used to help people sleep better. This White Noise App is composed of the peaceful, comforting sounds of rain, wind, thunder, waterfall, water drops and more. To top things off, each sound is accompanied by their corresponding wallpaper.

White Noise produces soothing and calming sounds in our brain that sends signals into our body that encourage it to become sleepier. Though a significant many has utilized this species of “noise” as their stairway to sleep, others still choose the television as their means for a good night’s sleep. You have to prevent this habit, because even if it helps you doze off, a part of your brain still pays attention to the news or movie or any story the TV is providing. This may cause your brain to be confused, wondering if it will send a “time to sleep” signal or “wake-up and listen” signal in our system. Don’t baffle your brain. Give it the care it deserves. Go ahead. Treat it to some of that white noise we’ve been talking about.
